Scapegrace is a New Zealand spirits brand founded in 2014 by Auckland-based brothers-in-law Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin. The name itself is telling — a "scapegrace" is an old word for a rascal or libertine — reflecting the brand's rebellious spirit and willingness to challenge convention. From the very beginning, single malt whisky was always part of the long-term vision, even as Scapegrace first built its reputation in the gin and vodka categories. The brand has grown into New Zealand's largest independent spirits producer, with a portfolio spanning super-premium gin, single malt whisky, vodka, and a range of premium RTDs. In 2022, Scapegrace released its first range of single malt whisky expressions, marking a milestone the founders had been working toward for nearly a decade. The distillery is located on the shores of Lake Dunstan in Central Otago, a dramatic landscape in the Southern Alps that shapes the character of its spirits. In late 2024, Scapegrace cut the ribbon on its new facility — now the largest and most advanced distillery in New Zealand.
