Port Charlotte

/port SHAR-let/

Port Charlotte is not a distillery in its own right, but a heavily peated whisky brand produced under the banner of Bruichladdich Distillery on the Hebridean island of Islay, Scotland. The brand takes its name from a picturesque white village located just two miles from the Bruichladdich distillery. That village was once home to its own whisky distillery, the Lochindaal distillery, which operated for approximately 100 years between 1829 and 1929 before falling silent. Bruichladdich revived the Port Charlotte name as part of its expanded range following its reopening in 2000. While Bruichladdich itself is known for unpeated whisky, Port Charlotte represents the distillery's heavily peated style, sitting between the classic Bruichladdich expression and the super-heavily peated Octomore range. The brand was relaunched in June 2018 with a refreshed lineup of four expressions, anchored by the Port Charlotte 10 Year Old. These whisky's are characterised by bold, smoky profiles with rich coastal and peaty complexity that is distinctly Islay in character. Port Charlotte has earned a strong following among peat lovers who appreciate its well-balanced approach to smoke — powerful yet refined. As one of three distinct ranges produced at Bruichladdich, it demonstrates the distillery's commitment to exploring the full spectrum of Islay's whisky-making tradition.
