Pōkeno (pronounced 'Paw-Que-No') is a New Zealand single malt whisky distillery founded in 2017, named after the small town of Pōkeno in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. The distillery set out with a clear ambition: to craft bold, creative single malts made uniquely from New Zealand ingredients. Using locally-grown barley and iron- and manganese-rich volcanic spring water, Pōkeno has positioned itself as one of the most exciting new voices in the global whisky landscape. The Pōkeno portfolio is defined by its adventurous spirit and dedication to distinctive cask maturation. Their flagship expression, Origin, is matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels, showcasing the natural character of New Zealand terroir. The distillery has also demonstrated impressive technical ambition — despite operating with only two stills, Pōkeno has produced a triple-distilled single malt in a style reminiscent of Benriach. Other expressions include the Winter Malt and experimental single cask releases such as the Amontillado Cask, highlighting their willingness to push boundaries. Pōkeno has quickly earned recognition as an award-winning distillery, attracting international distribution including a UK launch through Mangrove. With its invitation to 'dare to discover different,' the brand has firmly established itself as a pioneering force in New Zealand whisky.
