Pittyvaich is one of Scotland's most short-lived and enigmatic distilleries, established in 1975 by Arthur Bell & Sons in the heart of Dufftown, Speyside. Built directly next door to Bell's existing Dufftown distillery, Pittyvaich was created primarily to meet the growing demand for malt spirit to support the company's blending operations. When Diageo eventually absorbed the distillery through its acquisition of Bell's, the site continued operating only until 1993 — making its active life barely eighteen years and earning it the reputation as one of the briefest-lived malt distilleries in Speyside history. Despite its short operational lifespan, Pittyvaich has garnered a dedicated following among collectors and enthusiasts. The whisky is characterised as pithy, charred, and occasionally sweet — a distinctive style that sets it apart from many of its Speyside neighbours. Bottlings have appeared under the Flora & Fauna series with a 12 Year Old expression, and Diageo has continued to release aged expressions through its prestigious Special Releases programme, most notably a 29 Year Old from the 2019 edition, distilled in 1989. With the distillery now demolished and stocks finite, Pittyvaich expressions have become increasingly rare and sought after. Diageo has actively defended the brand's integrity and reputation, underscoring the historical and collectible value of this lost Speyside gem.
