Oban Distillery was founded in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson in the coastal town of Oban on the west coast of Scotland, making it one of the oldest distilleries in the country — and the oldest in Diageo's portfolio. Oban holds the remarkable distinction of being the only single malt Scotch whisky distillery that played a direct role in shaping the growth of a large town around it. The name "Oban" itself means "Little Bay," a nod to its scenic harbour setting in Argyll and Bute within the Scottish Highlands. As one of Scotland's smaller distilleries, Oban produces approximately 870,000 litres of pure alcohol annually. Its whisky is celebrated for a distinctive West Highland flavour profile that bridges the gap between the fruity richness of the Highlands and the maritime, smoky qualities of the Islands. The result is a cult coastal spirit with depth and complexity, earning it a devoted following among single malt enthusiasts worldwide. Since 1988, Oban has been a cornerstone of Diageo's Classic Malts portfolio, cementing its reputation as one of Scotland's most iconic expressions. Its flagship Oban 14 Year Old remains the definitive showcase of the distillery's refined, maritime character.
