North of Scotland was a grain whisky distillery located in Alloa, in the Lowland region of Scotland. The distillery began production in 1957 and operated until its closure in 1980, leaving behind a legacy preserved almost entirely through aged cask releases. Some of its grain whisky was bottled under the name 'Alloa', offering collectors and enthusiasts a rare glimpse into the distillery's output. The distillery was known for producing grain whisky, and its expressions are now highly sought after on the secondary and specialist market. Because production ceased decades ago, all available bottlings are by definition aged releases β often matured for extraordinary lengths of time. A notable example is the North of Scotland 50 Year Old, a whisky aged in bourbon casks for more than half a century, showcasing the remarkable depth and complexity that extended maturation in grain whisky can achieve. With no active production, North of Scotland has become a collector's gem β a 'lost distillery' whose remaining stocks are bottled in limited quantities by independent bottlers and specialist retailers. Its rarity, combined with the exceptional quality of its long-aged expressions, has cemented its reputation among whisky connoisseurs worldwide.
