North British Distillery is one of Scotland's most significant grain whisky producers, established in 1885 in Edinburgh. The distillery was founded as a cooperative venture by a group of whisky blenders who sought to reduce their dependence on the Distillers Company for grain spirit supply. John Crabbie, later known for his green ginger wine, served as the first chairman of the North British Distillery Company. Today, the distillery is jointly owned by two of the industry's biggest players: Diageo and the Edrington Group, the latter having taken a shareholding as early as 1885. Located in Edinburgh, North British is one of only six grain distilleries operating in Scotland and one of the largest producers of grain spirit in the country. The distillery focuses primarily on corn-based distillation, producing a lighter, more neutral grain whisky that has long been a vital component in many renowned Scotch blends. While its spirit forms the backbone of countless blended whiskies, independent bottlers such as Murray McDavid and Lady of the Glen have also released single grain expressions, offering whisky enthusiasts a rare chance to explore its character — typically smooth, approachable, and subtly sweet.
