Mortlach is one of Scotland's most storied distilleries, founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Donald McIntosh, and Alexander Gordon in the Speyside town of Dufftown. As the first licensed distillery in Dufftown — the first of the famous 'Seven Stills of Dufftown' — it holds a unique place in Scottish whisky history. After a turbulent early period, the distillery was sold to John Walker & Sons in 1923, linking it to one of the world's most iconic whisky empires. Today, Mortlach is part of the Diageo portfolio. Mortlach is renowned for producing a rich, bold, and full-bodied single malt with a distinctly powerful character that has earned it the legendary nickname 'The Beast of Dufftown.' Its malt whisky is also a key component in Johnnie Walker Black Label, underlining its importance as a blending ingredient. Mortlach was first released as a single malt in 1992 as part of Diageo's Flora & Fauna collection, and a celebrated 20 Year Old expression was released in 2018, further cementing its reputation. Mortlach has developed a devoted cult following among whisky enthusiasts who prize its uncompromising intensity and depth. The 'Beast of Dufftown' moniker perfectly captures the distillery's spirit: untamed, expressive, and unmistakably Speyside.
