Miyagikyo is a Japanese single malt whisky distillery founded in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru, the legendary figure known as the father of Japanese whisky. Located in the Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japan, it was built as the second distillery of the Nikka Whisky company, complementing the older Yoichi distillery on Hokkaido. Taketsuru chose the site for its pure water sources and the cool, misty climate — conditions he believed were ideal for producing a distinctly different style of whisky. Where Yoichi is known for its bold, peaty, and coastal character, Miyagikyo produces a whisky of a markedly contrasting style: lighter, more floral, and elegantly fruity. The distillery is also home to Nikka's Coffey stills, which are used to craft grain whisky that forms a key component in several Nikka blends, including the popular Nikka Days. The single malt expressions from Miyagikyo are bottled at 45% ABV and showcase the distillery's signature delicate and aromatic profile, making them a favourite among fans of refined Japanese whisky.
