Mars Whisky is a Japanese whisky brand produced by Hombo Shuzo, a company with roots stretching back to 1872 in Kagoshima, Japan. While the company has over a century of experience in the spirits industry, its whisky journey began in 1949 when the Hombo family first obtained a license to distill whisky, with actual production commencing around 1960. This pioneering spirit has made Mars one of Japan's most historically significant whisky producers. The brand's flagship distillery, Mars Shinshu, was established in 1985 in the Nagano Alps at an elevation of approximately 792 meters above sea level, making it Japan's highest whisky distillery. The cool mountain climate and pristine alpine air contribute to a distinctive and elegant style. After being mothballed from 1992 to 2011, the distillery was revived to meet growing global demand for Japanese whisky. In 2016, Hombo Shuzo expanded its operations by opening a second distillery, Mars Tsunuki, back in Kagoshima prefecture.
