Macduff

/mac-DUFF/

Macduff Distillery was founded in 1960 by a consortium of Glasgow-based whisky brokers — Brodie Hepburn, Marty Dyke, George Crawford, and James Stirrat — on the banks of the River Deveron in the north-eastern part of Scotland, close to the town of Banff. Production officially began in 1963, and the distillery's first whisky was bottled in 1968 as a five-year-old labelled 'Macduff Pure Malt'. Over the decades, ownership has changed hands several times: Martini & Rossi operated the distillery for over 20 years before Bacardi acquired it in 1993. Today, Macduff continues to operate under Bacardi's stewardship, run via John Dewar & Sons. Macduff is perhaps best known as the source of Glen Deveron, its main official single malt expression. The distillery lies in the north-eastern reaches of the Speyside region, close to the River Deveron and the sea — a location that subtly influences its style. Whisky produced at Macduff is primarily matured in ex-bourbon casks, with some maturation in ex-sherry casks, resulting in approachable, fruit-forward drams with a gentle coastal character. The distillery's spirit is also highly sought after by independent bottlers, making Macduff releases a recurring favourite among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
