Littlemill is one of Scotland's most historically significant distilleries, established in 1772 in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, when George Buchanan acquired the Auchentorlie estate. Although whisky production at the site may date back to that year, the distillery received its first official license in 1817. Often cited as Scotland's oldest licensed distillery, Littlemill carries a legacy spanning over two and a half centuries — a remarkable distinction in the world of Scotch whisky. Situated in the Lowlands, Littlemill was known for its innovative approach to whisky-making and produced a distinctly light and elegant style typical of the region. The distillery changed hands numerous times throughout its history before finally closing its doors in 1994. Tragically, a devastating fire in 2004 destroyed much of what remained of the site, making surviving casks exceptionally rare and highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Despite its closure, Littlemill continues to release extraordinary expressions from its dwindling reserves. In 2022, the brand celebrated its 250th anniversary, and in 2024, a 47-year-old single malt was launched at £14,500. The "Echoes of the Past" collection stands as a testament to the distillery's enduring legacy and the timeless quality of its remaining whisky.
