Linkwood Distillery is one of Speyside's most storied yet understated producers. Founded in 1821 by Peter Brown, a factor of the Seafield estates in Moray and Banffshire, the distillery held its first distillation in 1824. After Peter's death, his son William Brown continued the family legacy, cementing Linkwood's reputation as a quality Speyside producer. Located close to the Speyside capital of Elgin, the distillery later became part of the DCL (Distillers Company Limited) portfolio in 1932, a precursor to the modern drinks giant Diageo. Linkwood has long been regarded as a prized component by blenders, with the vast majority of its production going into some of Diageo's most iconic blended Scotch whiskies, including Johnnie Walker, White Horse, and J&B. Its single malt expressions are relatively rare, but the distillery does bottle a 12-year-old expression that showcases its characteristically smooth and elegant Speyside style. The whisky is considered high quality and serves as an important backbone in several prestigious blends. Despite its relatively low profile as a single malt, Linkwood has attracted attention from independent bottlers. Gordon & MacPhail have released exceptional casks from the distillery, including a remarkable 60-year-old bottling from a 1956 first-fill sherry hogshead, as well as a 50-year-old expression distilled in 1971, underscoring the remarkable ageing potential of this quietly exceptional Speyside malt.
