Laphroaig is one of the most iconic single malt Scotch whisky distilleries in the world, located on the southern shore of Islay. Founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston — descendants of MacDonald stock, tracing back to MacIan of Ardnamurchan — the distillery has a richly storied history. Though some accounts suggest the Johnston brothers may have begun operations as early as 1810, 1815 remains the officially recognised founding year. Today, Laphroaig is part of the Beam Suntory portfolio, following the acquisition of Beam Inc. by the Japanese company Suntory Holdings. Laphroaig boldly calls itself "the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies," a claim few would dispute. The distillery is celebrated for its intensely peated, smoky character, with distinctive notes of seaweed, iodine, and medicinal smoke that make it unmistakable. Its core range includes the classic 10 Year Old, the Quarter Cask, the 10 Year Old Cask Strength, and the 18 Year Old — expressions that have helped make Laphroaig one of the best-selling single malts in the world. Alongside Ardbeg and Lagavulin, Laphroaig forms the celebrated triumvirate of heavily peated southern Islay malts. With a brand personality described as cheeky and humorous, Laphroaig has cultivated a fiercely loyal global following — proof that its bold, polarising style is exactly what makes it so beloved.
