Killowen Distillery is one of Ireland's smallest and most innovative craft distilleries, founded by Brendan Carty — originally an architect — in 2017. The distillery is located in a converted barn in the Mourne Mountains of County Down, Northern Ireland. Operating on a modest scale of around 10,400 to 15,600 litres per year, Killowen has quickly earned a reputation for meticulous, artisan production and a deep respect for historic Irish distilling traditions. Under head distiller Brendan Carty, Killowen focuses on producing historic peated Pot Still Irish whiskey, alongside Poitín, gin, and rum. The distillery is known for its experimental approach to cask maturation, releasing single cask expressions for markets across the world, including exclusive bottlings for Canada. Its Barántúil range and Pangur rested line showcase the diversity and creativity that define Killowen's style — from mixed mash bills to unusual cask finishes such as stout casks. Killowen's reputation has grown steadily on the international stage. In 2024, Foley Family Wines & Spirits was appointed as the exclusive US importer, bringing Killowen's whiskey's to a wider American audience. The distillery has also received recognition through award wins, including double gold medals in international competitions, cementing its status as one of Northern Ireland's most exciting emerging whiskey producers.
