Karuizawa Distillery stands as one of the most legendary and sought-after names in the world of Japanese whisky. Built in 1955 in Miyota, Nagano Prefecture, by Daikoku-Budoshu — a Japanese wine company with vineyards in the region — the distillery was founded with a clear ambition: to craft Japanese whisky in the Scottish tradition. The remote mountain setting, near the resort town of Karuizawa, provided a cool climate ideal for maturation. After operating for 46 years, the distillery closed its doors in 2000 and was eventually demolished, making its remaining stocks extraordinarily rare. From the outset, Karuizawa set itself apart through its commitment to quality and tradition. The distillery famously used Golden Promise barley — a strain closely associated with Speyside producers — and aged its spirit predominantly in small sherry casks. This combination produced intensely rich, complex single malts with deep dried fruit, spice, and chocolate notes. As stocks dwindled, the whisky was gradually introduced to Western markets, notably through Number One Drinks, founded by David Caroll and Marcin Miller in 2006. Today, Karuizawa is widely regarded as one of the holy grails of whisky collecting. Bottles regularly command extraordinary sums at major auction houses including Sotheby's, and demand continues to far outpace supply. With the last remaining casks now being released, each bottling marks a piece of irreplaceable whisky history.
