
Isle of Jura is a single malt Scotch whisky produced on the Isle of Jura, one of Scotland's most remote and rugged islands. The island's distilling history stretches back to 1810, when the first legal distillery was established. In 1831, William Abercrombie obtained a license and relaunched production to great success, though the distillery faced struggles throughout the 19th century. The current distillery went into production in 1963, following a period of inactivity, and in 1974 Isle of Jura debuted on the market as a single malt whisky. In 1978, the number of stills was doubled from two to four. George Orwell famously described the island's location as "extremely unget-at-able" in 1946 — a characterisation that still rings true today. Jura single malts are known for their approachable, versatile style, ranging from lighter, unpeated expressions to more heavily peated bottlings. The distillery produces a broad portfolio that caters to a wide range of palates, from whisky newcomers to seasoned enthusiasts. In 1994, Whyte & Mackay acquired the distillery, bringing it under a larger umbrella while maintaining Jura's distinct island identity. Today, the brand also produces Deer Island Rum, a small-batch Scottish spiced rum crafted on the island.
