Inchgower Distillery was founded in 1871 by Alexander Wilson & Co., built on the shores of the Moray Firth near the town of Buckie. Constructed using equipment salvaged from the nearby Tochineal Distillery, Inchgower holds a unique place in Scottish whisky history as the most northerly distillery in the Speyside region and, notably, its only coastal distillery. After the Wilson family's company was liquidated in 1903, Buckie Council purchased the distillery in 1936, before it was subsequently acquired by Arthur Bell & Sons. The distillery later came under the ownership of Diageo, the global drinks giant that oversees it to this day. Inchgower produces a maritime-influenced Speyside single malt that stands apart from the region's typically fruity and floral style. Its coastal location lends the whisky a distinctive character, combining elements of brine and sea air with the more classic Speyside qualities of malt and gentle sweetness. The distillery's best-known official bottling is the 14-year-old expression, released as part of Diageo's respected Flora and Fauna series. However, Inchgower's spirit is most widely encountered as a key blending component in Johnnie Walker, one of the world's most recognised Scotch whisky brands, and various other Diageo blends.
