Speyside, Scotland · Founded in 1898
Glentauchers Distillery was established in 1897 in the heart of Speyside by renowned whisky blender James Buchanan and his business partner WP Lowrie, who had been working together since 1884. The distillery was built during the peak of the late Victorian whisky boom and was originally created to supply fillings for Buchanan's celebrated blends, including the iconic Buchanan's and Black & White. Over the decades, ownership changed hands several times, with Allied Domecq acquiring the distillery in the 1980s before it eventually became part of the Pernod Ricard portfolio. Today, Glentauchers operates six stills with a capacity of 4.2 million litres per year, producing unpeated spirit with a fermentation period of around 60 hours. The vast majority of its production is destined for blending purposes — most notably as a key component of the hugely popular Ballantine's Blended Scotch Whisky. As a result, official single malt bottlings are relatively rare, making independent releases from bottlers a prized find for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Despite its low profile as a single malt, Glentauchers enjoys a strong reputation among blenders for its consistent, high-quality spirit. Its Speyside character — typically smooth and approachable — makes it a valuable backbone in some of the world's best-selling Scotch blends.
