Lowland, Scotland · Founded in 1825
Glenkinchie is a Lowland single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the rolling farmland of East Lothian, just a short distance from Edinburgh. It was founded in 1825 by brothers John and George Rate under the name Milton Distillery, before being officially renamed Glenkinchie in 1837. As one of the few remaining Lowland distilleries in Scotland, Glenkinchie holds a special place in Scottish whisky history and is often referred to as 'The Edinburgh Malt' due to its proximity to Scotland's capital city. Glenkinchie is renowned for producing light, delicate, and approachable single malts that are characteristic of the Lowland style. The distillery is part of Diageo's portfolio and contributes to some of the world's most iconic blended Scotch whiskies, including Johnnie Walker. Its flagship expression, the Glenkinchie 12 Year Old, is widely celebrated for its floral, grassy, and gently sweet character, making it an ideal introduction to Scotch whisky. In addition to its core range, Glenkinchie releases a well-regarded Distillers Edition, which undergoes double maturation finishing in Amontillado sherry casks, adding extra complexity and depth to the distillery's signature elegant style. The distillery also houses a notable whisky museum on-site, further cementing its status as a landmark destination for whisky lovers visiting the Edinburgh region.
