Glengyle Distillery is located in Campbeltown, Scotland, one of the country's smallest but historically significant whisky regions. The distillery was originally founded in 1872 by William Mitchell, following a dispute between brothers John and William Mitchell, the latter of whom also had ties to the nearby Springbank Distillery. Glengyle operated until 1925, when it closed and fell silent for decades — a fate shared by many Campbeltown distilleries during the industry's long decline in the region. In 2000, J & A Mitchell and Co Ltd., the owners of Springbank, acquired Glengyle and set about reviving it. Distillation resumed in 2004, making it one of Scotland's newest operating distilleries. The whisky produced at Glengyle is released under the name Kilkerran — not Glengyle — because the trademark for the Glengyle name was held by another party at the time of the revival. Kilkerran single malts are known for their traditional Campbeltown character: a coastal, slightly peaty style with complexity and depth that reflects the region's storied heritage. As the third operating distillery in Campbeltown alongside Springbank and Glen Scotia, Glengyle plays an important role in the ongoing renaissance of this historic whisky region. The Kilkerran range has earned a strong reputation among enthusiasts for its quality and authenticity.
