Highland, Scotland · Founded in 1875
Glenglassaugh is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery situated on the rugged coastline of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, near the village of Sandend. Founded in 1875 by the Glenglassaugh Distillery Company, the distillery has had a turbulent history marked by several closures. It first closed in 1907 and reopened in 1960, only to fall silent again during the whisky crisis of the 1980s. Its modern revival began in 2008 when the Scaent Group, a Dutch investment company, acquired the distillery and restarted production in November of that year. In 2013, The BenRiach Distillery Company took ownership, and in 2016 the distillery became part of the American spirits giant Brown-Forman. Glenglassaugh produces coastal Highland single malts that reflect the influence of their seaside location near Portsoy in Aberdeenshire. The current core range includes the Glenglassaugh 12 Year Old, the Sandend, and the Portsoy — expressions that showcase the distillery's character with both matured and innovative styles. The whisky is known for its approachable yet complex profile, shaped by careful cask selection and the salty maritime air of the northeastern Scottish coast. Having survived multiple closures and changes of ownership, Glenglassaugh stands today as a true revival story in the world of Scotch whisky. Under the stewardship of Brown-Forman, the distillery continues to build its reputation as a coastal classic, combining over a century of tradition with a modern and refined whisky-making approach.
