Glen Esk, also known as Hillside, is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery with a history stretching back to 1897. Located in the Eastern Highlands of Scotland, the distillery operated for nearly nine decades before closing its doors in 1985. During its lifetime, it produced whisky under both the Glenesk and Hillside names, which can cause some confusion among collectors, but both names refer to the same distillery and its expressions. The distillery was known for its Highland single malt character, and its whiskies have become increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts since the closure. As no new spirit has been produced since 1985, all remaining bottlings are now rare and aged expressions, many of which have been released by independent bottlers. Expressions such as the Hillside 25 year old distilled in 1969 exemplify the style associated with this closed distillery. Glen Esk/Hillside holds a special place in the hearts of collectors of silent and closed distilleries. Its whiskies offer a rare glimpse into a style of Eastern Highland whisky that is no longer being made, making each surviving bottle a genuine piece of Scottish whisky history.
