Glen Elgin

Glen Elgin Distillery was founded in 1898 by William Simpson, a former manager of Glen Farclas distillery, and his business partner James Carle. Located in the Speyside region of Scotland, the distillery sits approximately 10 miles south of where the River Lossie meets the sea and around 40 miles east of Inverness, near the town of Elgin in Moray. Though construction began in 1898, production did not officially start until May 1900. Over the following decades, the distillery changed hands several times before eventually becoming part of the Diageo portfolio through a series of mergers. Glen Elgin is considered an unusually distinctive Speyside single malt, produced by a little-known yet traditional distillery. Today, the vast majority of its spirit is used as a key component in blended Scotch whisky, most notably in Diageo's iconic Johnnie Walker range. Official single malt bottlings are rare, which makes independent releases from organisations such as the Scotch Malt Whisky Society particularly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. In the early 2000s, Glen Elgin was featured as part of a series of special releases, further raising its profile among single malt aficionados.
