Glen Albyn

Glen Albyn was a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery founded in 1846 by James Sutherland, a local landowner and Mayor of Inverness. The distillery was established on the site of a ruined brewery and malt kilning facility in Inverness, making it one of the city's most historically significant whisky-producing sites. Over the decades, the distillery changed hands several times, with John Birnie taking over operations in 1885 and the consortium Stewart Galbraith & Co acquiring a controlling interest by 1905, alongside Benromach and Glen Dromach. In 1920, the neighbouring Glen Mhor distillery took full control of Glen Albyn, and the site eventually came under the ownership of DCL, later part of Diageo, one of the world's largest spirits companies. Glen Albyn produced a classic Highland single malt, appreciated for its regional character. The distillery is now closed, and its remaining bottlings are highly sought after by collectors, with vintage releases such as the 1980 12 Year Old still appearing at auction. As a closed distillery, Glen Albyn occupies an important place in the history of Inverness whisky making. Its bottles are now rare collector's items, offering a glimpse into a style of Highland whisky that no longer exists in active production.
