Girvan is a Lowland grain whisky distillery located in Girvan, Ayrshire, on the west coast of Scotland. Built by William Grant & Sons in 1963, the distillery was constructed in a remarkable feat of speed — completed in just nine months. Its creation was driven by the need for William Grant & Sons to secure their own supply of grain whisky for their blended Scotch portfolio, freeing the family-owned company from dependence on outside suppliers. The distillery was the brainchild of Charles Gordon, then Managing Director of William Grant & Sons. Girvan is one of the largest grain whisky distilleries in Scotland, and it remains a cornerstone of the William Grant & Sons operation, supplying grain spirit for iconic blends such as Grant's. Over the decades, however, Girvan has also gained recognition as a single grain Scotch whisky in its own right. The Girvan Patent Still range showcases the distillery's lighter, smooth, and approachable character — typically featuring notes of vanilla, honey, and fresh fruit that are characteristic of grain whisky made in column stills. With casks filled as early as 1964, Girvan has built an impressive library of aged stock. Releases such as the Girvan Patent Still First Batch highlight the depth and complexity that long maturation can bring to grain whisky, helping to elevate the category's reputation among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
