Deanston Distillery is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky producer located in the village of Deanston, near Doune in Perthshire, Scotland. Founded in 1964, the distillery sits along the banks of the River Teith — a waterway that plays a central role not just in the landscape, but in the distillery's operations. Deanston holds the distinction of being the first hydroelectric self-sufficient distillery in Scotland, drawing all its power from the River Teith. Though single malt bottlings began relatively early in 1974, it is only in more recent years that Deanston has risen to prominence as a front-line single malt brand. Deanston's portfolio is defined by a clean, unpeated Highland style with a focus on natural and sustainable production. A landmark achievement came in 2000, when Deanston became the world's first certified organic Scotch whisky, accredited by the Organic Food Federation. The range includes expressions such as the Virgin Oak, aged in first-fill American oak casks, as well as older and limited-edition releases including a 20-year-old organic expression that has received considerable acclaim. The distillery is part of a broader portfolio that also includes Bunnahabhain and Tobermory. Deanston was acquired by blenders Burn Stewart in 1990, which later became part of Distell in 2022. Despite its relatively short history compared to many Scottish distilleries, Deanston has built a strong reputation for quality, sustainability, and innovation within the Highland whisky landscape.
