Connemara

Connemara is Ireland's pioneering peated single malt Irish whiskey, launched in December 1995 by the Cooley Distillery — one of Ireland's independent distilleries. Named after the rugged, peat-rich landscape of Connemara on Ireland's west coast, the brand set out to revive a style of whiskey that had all but disappeared from Ireland. Today, Connemara is produced at the Kilbeggan Distillery, one of the world's oldest licensed distilleries dating back to 1757, alongside sister brands Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell, and Greenore. The distillery is now part of the Suntory Global Spirits portfolio. Connemara stands apart from the vast majority of Irish whiskeys by embracing peat smoke — a characteristic more commonly associated with Scotch whisky. As a peated pot still single malt, it strikes a distinctive balance between the smooth, approachable character of traditional Irish whiskey and the bold, smoky complexity of peat. The core expression is a blend of aged whiskies — including 4-, 6-, and 8-year-old casks — matured in ex-bourbon barrels, resulting in a whiskey that is both accessible and layered. To this day, Connemara remains the only widely available Irish peated single malt on the market.
