Coleburn Distillery was founded in 1897 by the blender James Robertson & Son of Dundee, with construction completing in 1899. Hidden behind a rich green landscape, the distillery was situated in Longmorn, five miles south of Elgin in Speyside. Built during the boom period of the 1890s, Coleburn changed hands several times over the decades: in 1916 it was sold to the Clynelish Distillery Company, a joint venture between John Risk, John Walker & Sons, and Distillers Company Limited. Production was later restarted around 1930 under DCL ownership, but the distillery was ultimately closed in 1985 due to degrading plant conditions. Because Coleburn operated for nearly a century before its closure and never produced bottlings under its own name for the retail market, the single malts that do exist are extraordinarily rare. Independent bottlers such as Gordon & MacPhail have released carefully matured expressions from remaining casks, offering whisky enthusiasts a glimpse into this largely forgotten Speyside distillery. Today, Coleburn Distillery has found a new purpose as the home of Murray McDavid, an independent bottler that continues the tradition of artfully matured Scotch whisky in Speyside. Coleburn single malts are considered among the rarest Scotch whiskies in the world, making any surviving bottle a true collector's item and a fascinating piece of Scottish whisky history.
