Chichibu Distillery was founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto, whose family's connection to the world of Japanese spirits stretches back centuries. The Akuto family has been involved in brewing since 1625 through Toa Shuzo, a sake producer, making Chichibu part of a remarkably deep-rooted heritage. Located in the Chichibu region of Saitama Prefecture, the distillery is widely regarded as one of Japan's first true craft distilleries and has quickly earned a place among the country's most respected whisky producers. Chichibu's whisky is released under the celebrated "Ichiro's Malt" label, a brand that has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and craftsmanship in the Japanese whisky scene. The distillery is known for its hands-on, artisanal approach and its willingness to experiment with different cask types and maturation techniques. In 2019, a second facility — Chichibu Distillery II — was established to meet growing global demand, with its debut release marking another milestone for the brand. Ichiro Akuto's Cards Series, a collection of single cask bottlings named after playing cards, became legendary among collectors worldwide and helped put Chichibu firmly on the international whisky map. The distillery continues to be one of the most sought-after names in Japanese whisky, celebrated for both its limited releases and its consistent pursuit of excellence.
