Caperdonich is a largely undiscovered Speyside distillery with a fascinating and turbulent history. Founded in 1898 by James Grant, it was originally built directly across the road from Glen Grant and operated under the name Glen Grant No. 2. The distillery closed just a few years after opening, in 1902, and remained silent for over six decades before reopening in 1965 under its new name, Caperdonich — a name said to mean 'secret well' in Gaelic. In 1967, the name was officially changed to Caperdonich. The distillery became part of the Seagram portfolio, later administered by Chivas Brothers under Pernod Ricard, before finally closing its doors for good in 2002. Caperdonich is known for producing a light and approachable Speyside single malt, often described as an understated and underrated gem. Despite its relative obscurity, the whisky has attracted a devoted following among enthusiasts who appreciate its delicate, fruity character. Bottlings have typically appeared as small batch or independent releases, often at ages ranging from 12 to 30 years, making each expression a rare find. Caperdonich has been featured in Pernod Ricard's prestigious Secret Speyside collection, a curated series showcasing whisky from some of Speyside's rarest and now-vanished distilleries. Often nicknamed 'the ugly duckling' of Speyside, Caperdonich is increasingly celebrated as one of the region's hidden treasures.
