Cabrach Distillery is rooted in one of Scotland's most storied whisky landscapes — the remote Cabrach community in Speyside, North-East Scotland. This rugged area was once a legendary haunt of illicit distillers and smugglers, and was home to a licensed distillery as far back as 1827, when James Taylor received his licence. After more than 170 years of silence, whisky production has returned to the Cabrach thanks to the efforts of the Cabrach Trust, a heritage organisation founded in 2013 to preserve the region's cultural history and stimulate economic and social development in the area. The distillery is housed in the beautifully restored old stone steadings at Inverharroch, dating back to 1849, transformed into a modern craft distillery by Collective Architecture. The return of distilling to Cabrach represents not just a commercial venture, but a celebration of living heritage. Early expressions from the distillery have been noted for their approachable and inviting character, with tasting notes pointing to butterscotch, vanilla, and toffee — hallmarks of a spirit that reflects the gentle, community-driven spirit of the project. Cabrach is a rare example of whisky revival with deep cultural roots, blending respect for history with a forward-looking vision for a remote Scottish community.
