Boplaas is a South African estate distillery located in the Calitzdorp region of the Western Cape, with a distilling heritage stretching back to 1880. Originally renowned for its potstill brandy and port-styled wines, the farm has been producing wine under its own label since 1982, during which time it has claimed the SA Champion Port Trophy no fewer than 10 times. This long legacy of craftsmanship forms the foundation upon which its whisky ambitions have been built. Although whisky production at Boplaas only began in earnest over the past 12 years, the distillery has wasted no time establishing itself as a serious player on the global stage. Under the stewardship of Daniel Nel, who expanded the distillation division beyond its celebrated brandies, Boplaas now offers an innovative range of whiskies. Among its expressions is the Boplaas Single Grain Whisky (Bourbon Cask), a five-year-old matured in second and third fill bourbon casks, praised for its balance and approachability. Boplaas has quickly earned international recognition, outpacing global competitors at the World Whiskies Awards (WWA) 2025. These accolades underscore just how rapidly South African whisky — and Boplaas in particular — is making its mark on the world whisky map.
