Blair Athol
/blair ATH-ol/
Highland, Scotland · Founded in 1798
Blair Athol is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, founded in 1798 by John Stewart and Robert Robertson near the picturesque town of Pitlochry in Perthshire. Originally established under the name 'Aldour', the distillery adopted its current name in 1825 following significant expansion work. Its long history reflects the enduring whisky-making traditions of the Scottish Highlands, and it holds a respected place among Scotland's most historic distilleries. For much of its modern history, Blair Athol has served as a cornerstone of Bell's blended Scotch whisky, one of Scotland's best-selling blends. Acquired by Bell's in 1930 and later becoming part of the Diageo portfolio, the distillery produces a fruity, rich and approachable Highland single malt. Only around 1% of its production is bottled under the Blair Athol label, making official releases relatively rare. The distillery has released an 8-year-old expression as part of Diageo's Flora & Fauna series, and independent bottlers such as Signatory Vintage have offered notable cask selections for whisky enthusiasts seeking a deeper exploration of its character.
