Islay, Scotland · Founded in 1898
Benromach Distillery was established in 1898 during the late Victorian whisky boom in Forres, on the banks of the River Lossie in Speyside, Scotland. After a turbulent history marked by multiple closures and changes of ownership, the distillery was acquired by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. Following an extensive restoration, Benromach was officially reopened by Prince Charles in 1998 — exactly a century after it was first founded. Today, it holds the distinction of being the smallest working distillery in Speyside, employing just two people to craft its whisky. Benromach is known for reviving a traditional, slightly smoky Speyside style that had largely been forgotten. The distillery produces a diverse portfolio of single malts, ranging from its accessible core range to rare aged releases, cask strength vintages, and unique wood finishes. The Benromach 15 Year Old, often called the "Classic," is the distillery's most awarded expression, showcasing a well-balanced interplay between first-fill sherry and bourbon casks. This commitment to traditional craftsmanship and distinct character sets Benromach apart from its Speyside neighbours. With over 125 years of whisky tradition behind it — channelled through the expertise of Gordon & MacPhail — Benromach has earned a strong reputation for quality and consistency. Releases such as the Benromach 40 Year Old and the exceptional 50 Year Old have garnered widespread critical acclaim, cementing the distillery's status as one of Scotland's most respected small producers.
