Speyside, Scotland · Founded in 1834
Benrinnes is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery with roots stretching back to the early 19th century. The first recorded reference to a distillery on the slopes of Ben Rinnes dates to 1826, when Peter McKenzie established a licensed operation originally known as Lyne of Ruthrie. In 1834, the distillery was restarted and run by John Innes, marking a pivotal moment in its modern history. A notable figure in its later development was Alexander Edward, who also founded Craigellachie, Dallas Dhu and Aultmore, and purchased Oban. Today, Benrinnes is part of the extensive Diageo portfolio, with the vast majority of its production destined for iconic blends such as Johnnie Walker and J&B. What truly sets Benrinnes apart is its distinctive partial triple distillation process, a rare technique used between 1977 and 2007 that gave the spirit a rich, meaty and complex character. This method contributed to the unique profile found in expressions such as the celebrated 15-year-old Flora & Fauna bottling, which remains highly sought after by collectors. The distillery draws its water from the slopes of Ben Rinnes itself, adding a sense of terroir to the whisky. Despite being relatively little known to the wider public — most of its output going into blends — Benrinnes has earned a devoted following among single malt enthusiasts who prize its robust, full-bodied style. Independent bottlers have played an important role in bringing its character to a broader audience.
