Speyside, Scotland · Founded in 1898
BenRiach Distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff, nestled in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, in the Moray area. The distillery came to life during one of the most prolific periods in Scotch whisky history, with 33 new distilleries opening across Scotland in the 1890s. However, BenRiach's early years were turbulent — it closed just two years after opening in 1900, only to be reopened in 1965 before facing closure once more. This chequered history is part of what makes BenRiach such a fascinating chapter in Scottish whisky heritage. BenRiach is celebrated as a very traditional Speyside distillery, known for producing a diverse and expressive range of single malt Scotch whiskies. The distillery takes pride in its varied approach to maturation and its wide use of different cask types, resulting in a broad flavour portfolio that sets it apart from many of its Speyside neighbours. BenRiach is currently owned by the Brown-Forman Corporation, which has continued to uphold the distillery's commitment to quality and craftsmanship. BenRiach gained renewed prominence in the early 2000s under the influence of whisky entrepreneur Billy Walker, who helped shape the modern identity of the distillery before going on to found GlenAllachie. Today, BenRiach stands as a respected name in the world of single malt Scotch whisky, admired for its rugged character and rich, layered expressions.
