Ben Wyvis

Ben Wyvis is a lost Scottish distillery with a remarkably brief history. Built in 1965 as part of the Invergordon grain distillery complex in the Scottish Highlands, it was established to contribute to the blended Scotch whisky portfolio of Whyte & Mackay. The distillery operated for only eleven years before closing its doors in 1976, making it one of the more short-lived single malt producers in Scottish whisky history. Notably, an earlier distillery bearing the same name had previously operated between 1879 and 1926, though no whisky from that original site is known to still exist. Given its extremely limited production window, genuine Ben Wyvis single malt is exceptionally rare. The distillery's legacy lives on almost exclusively through independent bottler Signatory Vintage, which is widely recognised as the only bottler to have released Ben Wyvis as a single malt β€” a feat that was once thought impossible, as the whisky was believed to be lost entirely. Signatory holds a stock of over 10,000 casks from various distilleries, and their rescue of Ben Wyvis stands as one of the most celebrated finds in independent bottling history. Bottles of Ben Wyvis command significant attention among serious collectors and are frequently cited alongside other legendary lost distilleries such as Brora, Glenugie and Killyloch. The stills from the Ben Wyvis distillery were later installed at Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown, where they now produce Kilkerran Single Malt, giving the equipment a remarkable second life.
