Highland, Scotland · Founded in 1825
Ben Nevis Distillery, located on the outskirts of Fort William at the foot of Britain's highest mountain, is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries. It was founded in 1825 by the larger-than-life 'Long' John Macdonald — a 6ft 4in descendant of the Lords of the Isles — who gave his name to what would eventually become the famous Long John whisky blend. The distillery remained in family hands until 1941, when it was acquired by the eccentric Canadian businessman Joseph W. Hobbs, marking the beginning of a colourful new chapter in its history. Ben Nevis is a Highland single malt known for its robust, characterful style, with notes of smoke, spice and rich fruit. The distillery's core expression, the Ben Nevis 10 Year Old, was launched in 1996 and remains the cornerstone of the brand's portfolio. Its distinctive flavour profile has earned Ben Nevis a devoted following, particularly in Japan and among independent bottlers who prize its versatile and expressive casks. Today, Ben Nevis enjoys a strong reputation as a whisky darling in the Japanese market and the independent bottling scene, where limited and single cask releases are eagerly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
