Banff

Banff is a ghost distillery from the Speyside region of Scotland, with roots stretching back to 1824 when the first distillery was built in Inverboyndie by James McKilligan & Co. That original operation changed hands three times before closing in 1862. A second distillery was subsequently established in 1863, continuing the Banff name in the same area near the town of Inverboyndie in Speyside. Banff became part of the Diageo predecessor DCL (Distillers Company Limited) portfolio, which controlled a significant sweep of leading Scotch whisky brands. The distillery unfortunately met a dramatic end when it burned down and was permanently closed in 1983, making its remaining stocks increasingly rare and sought after by collectors. Banff was known for producing a robust, characterful Highland-style Speyside malt. Because Banff is a closed distillery, its whisky's are now exclusively available through independent bottlers and special releases. Among the most celebrated is the Diageo Rare Malts Selection bottling of a 1982 vintage — reportedly the only Banff 1982 ever officially bottled. Other notable releases have appeared under labels such as Signatory Vintage and Chieftain's Choice, cementing Banff's status as a prized rarity among single malt enthusiasts.
