Ballechin is the heavily peated expression produced at Edradour Distillery in the Scottish Highlands, one of the smallest traditional distilleries in Scotland, dating back to 1825. When Andrew Symington and Iain Henderson took over Edradour, they set out to explore a more heavily peated style of whisky, and in 2003 distillation of Ballechin began — named as a tribute to a former distillery once located near Edradour. The project marked a bold new chapter for this historic site. Ballechin whiskies are produced using heavily peated malt (≥50 ppm) and are typically matured in a variety of wine casks, setting them apart from many other Highland single malts. The portfolio gained particular recognition through "The Discovery Series," a programme of limited annual releases running from 2006 to 2013, each batch aged in a different style of wine cask — including Madeira, Burgundy, and Sauternes. This experimental approach allows enthusiasts to explore how different wood influences interact with the bold, smoky character of the spirit. Ballechin has built a loyal following among peat lovers who appreciate its unique combination of Highland provenance and robust smokiness. The range continues to evolve, with Edradour's expanded stillhouse ensuring that Ballechin remains a distinctive and celebrated name in the world of peated Scotch whisky.
