Lowland, Scotland · Founded in 1823
Auchentoshan is one of Scotland's most distinctive Lowland distilleries, with roots stretching back to the early 19th century. Established in 1823 on the outskirts of Glasgow, the distillery takes its name from the Gaelic "Achadh an Oisein," meaning "corner of the field." Some accounts suggest the site's history goes back even further to 1817, and early records indicate the distillery was founded by Irish refugees who settled near the city. Today, Auchentoshan forms part of the Beam Suntory portfolio, following the 2014 merger of Beam Inc. and Suntory, alongside other Morrison Bowmore distilleries. What truly sets Auchentoshan apart is its commitment to triple distillation — a process applied to every single drop produced at the distillery. This technique, rare among Scottish producers, results in a spirit that reaches approximately 81% ABV off the still, far higher than most Scottish distilleries achieve. The outcome is a characteristically smooth, light and versatile single malt that has earned Auchentoshan a loyal following. Its approachable style has led to the playful tagline "Hard to Pronounce, Easy to Drink!" Despite being one of the last remaining active Lowland distilleries in Scotland, Auchentoshan is often considered underrated by whisky experts. Its award-winning range of single malts continues to win admirers worldwide, proving that elegance and refinement are just as worthy of celebration as peaty complexity.
