Ardlair is not a standalone distillery but rather the name given to the unpeated expression produced at Ardmore Distillery, located in the Highland region of Scotland. The name Ardlair comes from a nearby stone circle, reflecting the deep connection to the local landscape. This style of production began when Ardmore transitioned from coal-fired to steam-powered stills, at which point an unpeated variant was introduced alongside the distillery's traditionally peated spirit. Ardmore itself became part of the Beam Suntory portfolio in 2014. As an unpeated Highland single malt, Ardlair offers a notably different character from Ardmore's signature smoky profile — earning it the playful nickname 'Ardless' among enthusiasts. The spirit has attracted attention from respected independent bottlers, including A.D. Rattray, Thompson Brothers, and Signatory Vintage's Single Malts of Scotland series, each releasing their own expressions at various ages and cask types. These bottlings have showcased the versatility and quality of the unpeated spirit coming off the Ardmore stills. Ardlair has gained recognition on the independent bottling circuit, with releases such as the Thompson Brothers 11-year-old and the WhiskyHeroes 'Untamed Grace' 10-year-old drawing praise from whisky enthusiasts and competition judges alike, including recognition at the World Whiskies Awards.
