Annandale Distillery is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, originally built between 1830 and 1836 by George Donald, a former excise officer, in the town of Annan in the Scottish Lowlands. Perfectly situated with abundant water, local peat, and ideal conditions for whisky production, the distillery quickly earned a strong reputation. A significant chapter in its history came in 1893, when Johnnie Walker and Sons acquired it, reportedly using Annandale's spirit as a source of peated whisky for their blends. After a long period of silence, the distillery was brought back to life when Professor David Thomson purchased it in 2007, with production eventually resuming and the first releases reaching shelves in mid-2018. Annandale produces both peated and unpeated single malt Scotch whisky, represented by two distinct expressions within its portfolio. The peated range, known as 'Man O' Words', and the unpeated 'Man O' Sword' pay homage to the rich local heritage of the Annan region. These releases reflect the distillery's commitment to quality and its deep historical roots, offering whisky enthusiasts a taste of a truly revived Scottish tradition. Despite being a relatively young revival, Annandale has quickly built a strong reputation among collectors and connoisseurs alike. Its limited releases and careful cask selection have positioned it as one of the most exciting emerging names in Scottish whisky.
