Akashi whisky is produced by Eigashima Shuzo, one of Japan's oldest family-run distilleries, located in Akashi city, Hyogo prefecture. The name Akashi is drawn from its hometown, translated as "The Sunrise City," where the owner's family has been crafting spirits for over three centuries. While the company has a long heritage in producing sake and shochu, it began distilling whisky in 1984 at its White Oak Distillery, building on generations of fermentation expertise. The White Oak Distillery crafts both blended and single malt expressions under the Akashi label. Its single malt whisky is distilled from imported Scottish malt and matured in coastal warehouses, where the sea air of Akashi Bay lends a distinctive character to the spirit. The portfolio includes accessible blended expressions such as the Akashi Red Label as well as limited single malt releases, offering a range that reflects both Japanese craftsmanship and the influence of its coastal environment. Akashi has earned recognition among whisky connoisseurs as an insider tip within the world of Japanese whisky. With only limited quantities of single malt bottled each year, these releases are particularly sought after by collectors. The brand's combination of a centuries-old heritage and a relatively young whisky tradition makes it a compelling and unique name in the global whisky landscape.
