Abhainn Dearg (pronounced 'Aveen Jarræk', Gaelic for 'Red River') is a pioneering single malt distillery located in Uig on the Outer Hebridean Isle of Lewis. Founded in 2008 by Mark Tayburn, it became the first legal distillery on the island since around 1840, quietly reviving a centuries-old tradition of whisky making in one of Scotland's most remote and ancient landscapes. Its establishment marked a significant moment for the Outer Hebrides, restoring legal spirit production to Lewis after nearly 170 years of absence. Abhainn Dearg is a fiercely independent, small-batch operation with an ambitious vision: to become a true field-to-bottle distillery, controlling every stage of production from grain to glass. The distillery released its first bottling from the 2008 spirit, offering whisky enthusiasts a rare taste of genuinely artisanal island single malt. The character of Abhainn Dearg reflects its remote, windswept location — raw, distinctive, and deeply tied to the Hebridean landscape and Gaelic heritage that surrounds it.
